Collector Car Auction Snapshot – 1955 Mercedes Benz 190SL – Sold for $110,000 at RM Auctions – Hershey, PA
A couple of weeks ago we spotted an early Mercedes Benz 190SL about to come up for sale at RM Auctions’ Hershey, PA event. This early 190SL was described as largely original, a real preservation class car with all the right bits, fresh out of long term ownership.
Photo courtesy of RM Auctions. We thought the auction estimate of $85,000 – $100,000 was perfectly realistic when we featured the car as it was ready to go to auction on the SL Market Letter website (see that write up and photos).
The car ended up selling for $110,000 including buyer’s premium on October 11, 2013 at RM’s Hershey, PA sale. That seems to be the going rate for nice 190SLs at auction these days. While you can still find them in private hands for less, this particular car was largely original and had a great look. The color combo of black with red leather is one of our favorites, the interior had a nice patina and it came with a detachable hard top.
A market correct price today, but it will probably look cheap in a year or 18 months.
