SL Market Letter Editor, John Olson, attended Retromobile in Paris this past week. He sent back this glimpse at one of the biggest surprises at RM Auctions‘ well attended first auction in Paris.
The Mercedes Benz 600 Pullman Six Door Landaulet… it was clear from the auction catalog photos that this 600 was a project, what nobody would have guessed was the price someone paid… 537,600 Euro (approximately $732,641 USD) including buyer’s premium.
Olson says:
“Here are two close-up photos of the six-door 600 “Pullman” Landaulet convertible that sold with spirited bidding (photos below). Without question, the worst condition 600 I have seen in my life: a candidate for the worst non-crash car that wasn’t crushed.
Interior ripped, loose everywhere. Paint coming off in chunks, broken glass. Missing parts. These cars (600 Pullman 6 door Landaulets) may also take the record for the most parts unique to one car ever built. Restoration will likely match its hammer price by the very few qualified rebuilders.”
Only 59 Landaulets were built; fewer than 20 were made with six doors.
More on how this “Reason or Chaos” affects “normal” car enthusiasts in the next SL Market Letter.
For now… some photos of the 600 sold at RM’s Paris sale.
