    This “nomenclature change”, which occurred for the 1994 model year for all Mercedes-Benz cars, was only coincidental to significant model changes made that year.
    The history of letters in M-B model names over the last 50 years is an entertaining story itself, as there is some overlap of meaning for the same letter on idfferent models. The Letter L, for example, refers to “long” or entended wheelbase on sedans, but it originally used on the two seat SLs to deliniate a “light” model. Even this has its detractors as none of the SL models of Mercedes-Benz are light in weight for their size. The use of capital or lower case letters also intends a different message. A lower case “d” refers to the fourth variant of the same model… any model. A capital “D” indicates diesel power.
